Understanding the Challenge

The University of British Columbia’s Application Ecosystem Program (AEP) presented a complex challenge: integrating Workday across a vast enterprise application landscape involving numerous existing systems and over 40 APIs. The core difficulty lay in ensuring robust, fault-tolerant interoperability between diverse platforms like MuleSoft, Workday, MS Dynamics, and AWS-based services. The need was for a strategic QA approach that could define a scalable test architecture, lead multi-platform integration testing, provide technical and operational oversight across two interlinked programs, and build a high-performing team to deliver quality within tight timelines, all while aligning with stakeholder expectations and regulatory compliance.

Key Contributions & Outcomes

Our team delivered substantial contributions to ensure the success and stability of UBC’s Application Ecosystem Program:

End-to-End QA Strategy & Architecture: We meticulously defined and implemented the comprehensive test architecture, test strategy, and execution roadmap for the AEP. This included delivering scalable QA solutions that were perfectly aligned with UBC’s intricate integration architecture and stringent governance standards.

Multi-Platform Integration Testing: We led the rigorous testing of MuleSoft-based integrations with Workday and MS Dynamics. Our efforts involved validating over 40 APIs, including complex AWS adapter connections and enterprise data synchronization processes, leveraging tools like Postman and custom automation scripts.

Program-Level Leadership: Our role encompassed providing both technical oversight and operational management across the AEP and IEC programs. We served as the central authority for all test planning, execution, and reporting activities related to integration workstreams, ensuring coherence and efficiency.

Strategic Planning for MS Dynamics Integration: We developed detailed test plans and executed thorough QA for business-critical MS Dynamics modules, including Supplier Invoices, Accounting Journals, and Internal Service Providers. This ensured seamless and accurate connectivity with the Workday platform.

Team Building & Enablement: A critical contribution was recruiting, mentoring, and rapidly ramping up a high-performing QA team. This accelerated project velocity and ensured the timely delivery of key milestones, even when operating under tight project timelines.

Stakeholder Alignment & Risk Mitigation: We fostered strong collaboration with project managers, vendors, and integrators, ensuring alignment on testing approaches. We skillfully balanced quality, budget, and time constraints, while consistently advocating for effective test coverage and efficient defect resolution.

Compliance & Reporting: We produced comprehensive test documentation essential for project transparency and accountability. This included detailed test plans, exhaustive traceability matrices, key test execution metrics, and vital post-implementation reports, all designed to support project audits and meet quality checkpoints.

The Application Ecosystem Program (AEP), alongside the Integrated Enablement Centre (IEC), was a significant initiative by the University of British Columbia (UBC). This program aimed to seamlessly integrate Workday across UBC's extensive enterprise application landscape, fostering a connected and efficient digital environment.
My dual role as Test Lead and Test Architect was pivotal in this program, spanning from October 2019 to January 2021. I was directly responsible for developing and leading the comprehensive quality assurance strategy, specifically focusing on ensuring robust interoperability across over 20 integrated applications and more than 40 APIs, involving critical platforms like MuleSoft, Workday, MS Dynamics, and AWS-based services.

Where It Took Them

The Application Ecosystem Program (AEP) achieved stable deployment across 20+ applications, with fully validated integration layers seamlessly connecting Workday, MS Dynamics, and various external systems. Our dedicated QA efforts were instrumental in ensuring consistent data integrity, maintaining process continuity, and minimizing disruption to the University of British Columbia’s critical enterprise operations.
