Understanding the Challenge
Canadian Tire faced the challenge of managing extensive manual testing efforts across their Workday Human Capital Management (HCM) and Finance modules, which was becoming increasingly time-consuming and resource-intensive with each new release. The need was clear: to move beyond traditional manual testing towards a more efficient, scalable, and cost-effective approach through test automation. The primary challenge involved identifying the most impactful automation opportunities within complex Workday processes, designing a robust and reusable automation framework, and effectively integrating it into their existing enterprise testing standards to enable faster, higher-quality deployments.
Key Contributions & Outcomes
Our team delivered critical contributions to establish a strategic test automation capability for Canadian Tire:
Automation Opportunity Discovery: We collaborated extensively with both Business and IT stakeholders to pinpoint optimal automation candidates across the HCM and Finance modules. We facilitated focused strategy sessions to ensure the scope of automation directly aligned with Canadian Tire’s overarching business goals and priorities.
Enablement & Strategic Advisory: A key part of our role was to educate business teams on the ‘art of the possible’ in test automation. We provided strategic advisory, helping stakeholders visualize precisely how automation could significantly improve operational efficiency, substantially reduce costs, and markedly increase overall test coverage.
Process Mapping & Qualification: We conducted detailed process walkthroughs in conjunction with capability leads, which enabled us to build a comprehensive Process Catalog. Subsequently, we applied advanced automation discovery models to rigorously qualify processes for automation based on their inherent value, complexity, and overall feasibility within the Workday environment.
Automation Strategy & Framework Design: We took the lead in the architectural design of a cutting-edge Workday test automation framework. This involved meticulously defining reusable components, efficient execution models, and seamless integration methods that strictly adhered to Canadian Tire’s enterprise-wide testing standards.
Governance & Documentation: To ensure long-term sustainability and consistent application, we authored comprehensive test automation guidelines. These included detailed test case specification templates, clear execution protocols, and robust governance processes, providing a solid foundation for future automation efforts.
Where It Took Them
As a direct result of this initiative, Canadian Tire successfully established a clear and actionable roadmap for Workday automation. This was complete with a thoroughly validated pipeline of processes earmarked for automation and a foundational, reusable framework. This significant undertaking enabled a strategic shift towards a continuous testing paradigm, effectively positioning the organization for faster, more reliable, and higher-quality software deployments in the future.
